Are You Experiencing Small Business Financing Problems?
So, you have a GREAT idea for a small business but you're running into small business financing problems? Maybe your business has even been established for a while, and now you feel like you're ready to expand. You've heard that there are small business loans or grants available "out there" somewhere, and boy they would sure come in handy, but you don't really know where to begin?

There are several potential small business financing problems (and OPPORTUNITIES!) that you may encounter as you try to track down those small business loans or grants for your company. Learning all you can BEFORE you start exploring will possibly help you save some time and money. The Better Business Bureau has a Warning out about CURRENT scams and frauds targeting small business owners seeking grants and loans.
Read the Better Business Bureau Warning HERE.
First of all, you need to know that while it's plausible you might find a PRIVATE small business grant somewhere (BE CAREFUL OF GRANT SCAMS!), federal small business grants in the U.S. are mostly a myth. My research has found that the only real businesses receiving federal grants are in the area of advanced technology and science (so if your company finds a viable way to "beam" people to another part of the world, or a new clean energy invention, for example, you may have a chance to receive some federal small business grants to continue your business development!).
Otherwise, it seems that the federal government has no stomach for giving away billions of dollars in federal small business grants (i.e. free taxpayer money) to millions of everyday small businesses. And based on statistics, you can't really blame the government.
...According to the Small Business Administration's FAQ page,
even though U.S. small businesses have accounted for 60-80% of new jobs over the past decade, in 2006, there were 649,700 new businesses, but 564,900 business closures, with 19,695 of those closures due to bankruptcies. So while hugely important to the economy, small businesses aren't exactly a sure thing for keeping their doors open.
So when the question comes down to small business loans or grants, by far your best shot will be to get a small business loan. And the U.S. government (along with private banks, venture capitalists and others) ARE VERY prepared to help out small businesses through this option - although small business STARTUP loans (for businesses less than 2 years old or so) are much harder to find than loans for business that are established and expanding. A good credit rating is also VERY important. ...But - you may still run into small business financing problems if you start your financing search UNPREPARED.
