While a few years ago it used to be easy to get good search engine rankings for a website, these days it can be a rather frustrating process. You need to do keyword research to see how to best optimize your website, and other factors are involved in getting high rankings too. A whole volume could be devoted to this subject alone.

But studying how to optimize your website for the search engines, and the free traffic that it can bring, is definitely worth the time investment. In fact, it's safe to say that if you intend your site to be a serious money making business and not just a hobby, you should not even begin to build your website UNTIL you've done the necessary Search Engine Optimization research FIRST. A whole slew of info can be found by just (ironically) doing a Google search on search engine optimization (SEO). Time should definitely be spent on this most important of free marketing ideas.

2) Craigslist.org is another top option among free marketing ideas and free advertising ideas. It is a worldwide bulletin board that serves over 30 million users per month. With only a few exceptions, you can advertise nearly anything for free. The only thing is, you can only advertise to a few cities at a time. You cannot post an ad and have it be a worldwide broadcast. Still, you can post to millions of people in the larger cities, OR you can even post to a localized small town, if that fits your needs better.

3) Article Writing is also among the top free marketing ideas to get good exposure for your website. The way that this works is that there are dozens of free article submission sites on the net. These sites provide free website/ezine content service for publishers. The content is submitted by just about anybody who wants to submit article content about any number of subjects for which they have good knowledge about.

This benefits both the publishers, who are seeking free content for their publications, and also the writer, because each publisher is obligated to include the writer's profile with the article. The profile usually INCLUDES the writer's website address, and so however many people read the article could conceivably also visit the writer's website (which makes this a great free advertising idea!)

4) Free Classifieds is another option for free internet advertising. It works just like placing ads in the classifieds section of a newspaper, only it's online based and FREE. Some ad sites are better than others. For instance, Craigslist, mentioned above, is one of the best free marketing ideas for many websites, and is in the arena of free classified advertising. Other sources, you probably won't get a tremendous amount of sales from, but if you have a product for sale that yields good money, then placing as many free classifieds as possible should be done.

5) Post Comments in Blogs and Forums. Blogs and forums are all over the internet and are two more free marketing ideas. All you have to do is search them out and find out which ones will let you put your website in your profile when you post a comment. If you can find enough and visit and post often, you can build up a decent amount of inbound links to your website, boosting both your free traffic and search engine rankings.
