If you are an internet newbie, you may be wondering what a computer virus is? Simply, it's when a scumbag computer geek with no morals and lots of time on their hands figure out ways to make other people's computers malfunction in order to get their jollies or worse - to get personal information from your computer.

They do this by figuring out destructive code that they can place on a website so that when you click a link to go to that website, your computer becomes infected by this destructive code or "virus". Depending on how destructive this virus code is, anything from negligible to considerable damage can be done to your computer's operating system and/or compromise your computer's files to the hacker.

Online Anti-Virus Reviews are Good Shopping Resources!

In order to try and prevent your computer from contracting these viruses, or (hopefully) extract viruses once your computer is infected, it is highly recommended that computer owners with Windows-based operating systems (especially) buy the best anti-virus software that they can find.

A good way to go about shopping for the best anti-virus programs for your computer is to look through the online search engines for anti-virus reviews (hopefully done by experts) which compare anti-virus software. This method of shopping very possibly is what brought YOU here!

Back in 2005, I had a computer that was so severely damaged and breached by viruses and spyware that I ended up having to discard it and buy another computer. That's when I started to really make it a point to start paying attention to ant-virus reviews and anti-spyware reviews EACH YEAR.(spyware is somewhat similar to a virus, but is usually made more for collecting information from your computer than it is to damage it - which in some ways is even worse!).

And now in 2008, I figured I'd share the research I've done that has helped me come up with (what I feel is) the best anti-virus software and best anti-spyware software rankings presently available on the market (for the purposes of this report I'll be sticking to anti-virus programs).

Now, I'm not a computer geek at all. So I've relied solely on what other online anti-virus reviews say about what they feel are the best anti-virus software programs. But the thing is - the anti-virus review sites all seem to have differing opinions on their top 5 or top 10 anti-virus ratings! They'd each compare and buy anti-virus software from the different manufacturers, but an aspect that received a good rating from one review site would receive a not-so-good rating from a another review site.

It was driving me crazy trying to decide WHICH was actually the BEST anti-virus software! You may have come across this dilemma too.

The Solution to Differing Anti-Virus Reviews

So finally I decided that I was going to try and solve the problem about which was best by coming up with a system that combines the differing reviews. And my system seems to have turned out well for me because I've been using the top products from my composite lists for the past three years on my home and work computers (though not always the 1st-place winner), and I've not had a virus problem since.

What I did was take five of the top anti-virus reviews sites and create a point system based on where anti-virus programs were ranked and how often they appeared on the various anti-virus review sites. (Note - there are more than five sites that have top 5 listings, so my composite list may not be absolutely definitive - but it works for me).

Here is the point system I use to determine the composite rankings of the five anti-virus reviews sites that I use:

- 5 points each time a program received a 1st place vote.
- 4 points each time a program received a 2nd place vote.
- 3 points each time a program received a 3rd place vote.
- 2 points each time a program received a 4th place vote.
- 1 point each time a program received a 5th place vote.
