Starting a Pet Photography Business:

pet photography business

Providing Portraits of Love......

The pet photography business started booming within the last decade or so. People make good money catering to other peoples’ pets, whether we’re talking about pet spas, pet hotels, pet resorts or pet photography. People simply ADORE their pets!

The pet photography business can be a fairly quick business to get started, potentially earning you a decent flow of cash if you set up your business properly. There are a myriad of pet owners who are more than willing to pay a professional photographer for great photos of their furry friends - or not so furry friends. These days, the pet photography business has become so popular that it can be a pet photography specialist business, especially in larger cities. In smaller cities, you can add pet photography to your list of photography services to add another stream of income.

This business is one that can honestly bring you significant revenue if done right. It can be one that is very low cost and fairly easy to maintain. Very low investment home based businesses are becoming very popular in today’s economy. This profession will also allow you a laid back schedule for the most part, as the effort that you will have to put into each session should be fairly minimal (unless you have to deal with an uncooperative pet!).

Of course, if the pet owner wants something special, it may take you more time to get the right photo for them. If you are a professional photographer who loves both animals and the environment, you should seriously consider the pet photography business. On the other hand, if you do not see yourself enjoying this sort of career, obviously you may want to try something else.

Starting Out...

To get started, you will need a decent name brand camera with lots of flexibility. This piece of equipment will be essential to your business. Not only is it important for photo quality, but you will always want to look as professional as possible to your customers. You will also need a nice photo studio with professional lighting and photo studio backdrops. If you own a nice house with a big room (preferably with very little natural light coming in) that you can turn into a studio, so much the better to keep operating costs down. A nice back yard with trees and flowers is also very convenient for outdoor shoots.

Most important though (besides your photography skills), is your professionalism. Word of mouth is one of the most important ways to advertise any business. If you do not give off a professional feeling to all of your customers, they may not speak as well to their acquaintances about your business. The better your business is spoken of, the more clientele you will have.

Also, remember to keep your studio area as clean and odor free as possible. This will add to the professional look of your business, but can be a challenge with a pet photography business.

Create and Showcase Your Portfolio...

Make sure that you keep both an in-store photography portfolio as well as a website photography portfolio so that customers and potential customers can take a look at your work for reference. It is also a good idea to advertise in local papers as well as on the internet to boost your customer base. What you charge your customers will be up to you. There are many people in this business that charge anywhere from two hundred to three hundred dollars per photo shoot. You should charge what you feel is adequate for the work you do and the quality of the photos you take.

A Photography Business Plan...

People who start a business need a business plan. If you are serious about a career as a professional photographer, you need a photography business plan. Photography business plans are necessary to "map out" your career path in photography so that you have a plan of action to follow.

Here is a good photography business plan template that is ready-made for people wanting to start a photography business...
