Do You Ever Hear These Cries for Help?..."Someone Pleeeease Define Blogging for Me!"or ..."What the HELL IS Blogging, ANYWAY??" I laugh because I STILL often hear flustered non-internet types asking these questions... asking for someone - ANYONE - to explain blogging to them. And I don't laugh just because these poor souls are so out of touch with today's internet technology (although that's part of it :-) No, I laugh because I was one of them not so long ago. And you know what? Trying to define blogging to somebody isn't very easy! The darn concept seems to be changing all the time - as rapidly as technology and marketing strategies change, the definition of blogging does too. This is because it is a concept that is always being reviewed and revised. New Technologies (and ways to monetize) are appearing almost daily, and they are redefining what a blog used to mean. So to define blogging, I think it would be helpful to take a look at the brief history of blogging. The History of BloggingIt used to be that to define blogging or to explain blogging one could simply describe it as a ‘text-based’ website that was for the purpose of keeping daily records of whatever the webmaster happened to be doing. A blog could therefore be likened to the log kept by the Captain of a vessel. So these web entries became known as "web-logs" or BLOGS for short. However, the definition of blogging and the history of blogging is changing over time. This is happening because the types of people who keep and publish blogs have become much more diverse. Those who were fervent bloggers began to expand and exploit the capabilities of the initial blogging concept. Many also exploited the technology that made blogging possible. This in turn tested the boundaries of the actual term ‘blog’ and what it originally meant. So "What the Hell Is Blogging" Today?Today we have an abundance of almost every kind of 'blog’ imaginable. There is a plethora of pet blogs, gardening blogs, recipe blogs, marketing blogs, photography blogs, and the list goes on and on. The advent of Mobile devices that support ‘blogging’, for example, is yet another technology advancement that could also have a huge impact on this evolving medium. And while it seems very acceptable (even expected) for the average "Joe and Jill Entrepreneur" to monetize their social or informational blog, it should come as no surprise to anyone that the definition of blogging is also being influenced by the element of the 'corporate blog’. Large companies have taken notice through the history of blogging, that this is the rise of a HUGE new pipeline of hungry consumers. So it's not hard to find big companies now adding blogs to their marketing mix to create a buzz about their respective brands. So we can see that all these various influences (and probably many more to come) are constantly reshaping, expanding and exploiting the ‘blogosphere’. So it is very difficult to imagine that when asked to define blogging and answer the ever-present question "What the Hell IS Blogging?", that a static answer will ever be sufficient for very long. |
